Welcome to My New Garden

It's tiny but I like it. This is the reason I haven't been doing much of the bloggin.

Let's see - from right to left and back to front we have:

BACK ROW
**??? - a white, tall perennial
**a bunch of baby pink impatients
**Russian Sage -purple flower, about 12" high perennial
**Hosta - this one's green with white border
**sunflower - which I hope will get enough sun but since it's Rene's favorite flower, I had to get it
**another bunch of baby pink impatients

MIDDLE ROW
**a half ring of baby pink and salmon impatients annuals
**a dark purple petunia bunch, also an annual

BOTTOM ROW
**periwinkle veronica which is excellent groundcover and is recommended for the edge of beds

Then I put up a fence and some butterfly stakes along with a cute "Welcome" thingy. I'm totally buying a Garden Gnome to put in the corner, as well.

The white thing to the right is where I'm going to *try* to grow some red peppers, chives and basil. Under the white things are: wet newspaper, covered with bags. This helps kill the sod so that it's easier to pull up and turn loose. After that, I'll add the planting soil and some mulch and wait while my seeds grow inside before transplanting them...

Such Fun!

Apartment Gardening

Remember last spring, when I heard Robert Pogue Harrison on On Point and it made me want to start gardening? So, I started small with some house plants. I've got two spiky thingies, a bamboo, a mother-in-laws tongue, a Peace Lily, one pink leafy thing, one mini ficus, some just plain green leafs, some stems and green leaf and the tiger leaves and a rosebush.

Now I'm going to do chives, red pepper and basil. We'll see. I'm going to do them from "scratch". And I'm going to buy a tomato plant and do that Topsy Turvy Planter thingy As Seen on TV.

Indoor gardening is fun! I can't wait to grow up and have an outdoor one someday in 2012 or later.

I believe in peace,

lilies. (Did you think, because I'm such a toriphile, I would say otherwise?)

Anyway, here we go:

Dear Ikea,

We're a bit disappointed in you, actually. We were so excited for the affordable, yet stylish closet set up and when it turned out the Northeast Ikeas were having an issue with the steel parts, well, it was a major let down. Major.

But you guarantee that we'll return to you in September, that's for sure.

However, you redeemed yourself a little at the end when I found a peace lily plant to replace Ne's, which has definitely kicked the bucket. Hence the title of the entry.

Another thing we found this time was the coconut pops. I wish they were on sale down at the food section, but since they're not, we'll have to seek them elsewhere. Low calories, low fat and mighty tasty.

Well, that's about all, my friend. Hope you get that steel supply sorted out ASAP.

I almost want one

I was listening to "On Point" on my way to work this afternoon and the guest was Robert Pogue Harrison, who has just written a book Gardens: An Essay on the Human Condition.

The Bahai Gardens in Haifi

The way they talked about gardens and gardening...so ecstatic, so intriguing, so tranquil but so exciting. Anyway, it almost made me want my own. Almost...But then I remembered I live in an apartment. I'm sure I could ask my landlord if I could use a patch of the front yard, the one of to the side. For real though, I'm not the gardening type. I love all my neighbor's work and what my mom does. My mom is very good at it and does it with such ease. But, I have a bit of a black thumb. Perhaps if I made a concerted effort, it wouldn't be so bad. I tend to space out and not notice things though. Like when I stayed in Weymouth with Daisy during Memorial Day weekend and my mom came home on Monday evening and pointed to the pink flower plant hanging to the side of the door. Only when she pointed it out, it was more brown than pink. Even though I walked by it all weekend long, I never noticed it!

So, instead of a garden, I think I will start small and get some plants for the house. If they're not dead by this time next year and I'm still in West Roxbury, maybe I'll think about it. In the meantime, I always have my walks around the neighborhood and Weymouth. And, of course, I'll be getting the book to read as well.
