Fill the steins to dear old Maine
Shout! Til the rafters ring
Stand and drink a toast once again
Let every loyal m(f)an sing!
Drink to all the happy hours
Drink to the careless days
Drink to Maine our alma mater
The college of our hearts always
I could go on and do the verses, but I'll spare you.
According to University of Maine administrators, it's NOT a drinking song. It's a CELEBRATION song.
Right. Right.
All snowmobile drivers MUST retire their vehicles off campus before Saturday's championship game, should the Black Bears win tomorrow. This is the only link I could find to the 1999 incident. My friend Mathy is quoted in it, too. It's a perfect quote for her, too. Link
Anyway, it's so nice to be a fan of a team that is always in the playoffs.
GO UMAINE!Also good today, the Red Sox kicked butt. Lurvely. Ah spring, I love your random snowshowers and end/beginning of my fav sports.

I'm not the only one who remembers 1999. Check out this letter sent via UMaine's intranet system to the entire UMaine community from Robert Dana, Dean of Students:
ReplyDeleteTo Members of the UMaine Community:
As the Black Bear hockey team prepares for the Frozen Four and a chance to play for another UMaine national championship, it is a great time for all of us to reflect with pride on the accomplishments of this team that represents all of us with such a high level of skill and achievement. This is certainly an exciting time for our entire community and for people across the state, as we anticipate what promises to be a memorable few days. The members of the team certainly benefit from the support they receive from all around Maine.
We're planning a series of activities that will allow us to celebrate and enjoy the excitement as a community while the Black Bears compete in St. Louis. We encourage everybody to join us at these planned activities, which are modeled after those we staged in 2002, 2004 and 2006, the most recent times that UMaine teams advanced this far in the NCAA tournament. In each of those cases, the tone of the celebrations was uniformly positive and all involved had a memorable time. Those UMaine celebrations have, in fact, been used by other institutions as a model to follow in such situations.
It is also worth pointing out what happened at UMaine in 1999, when the Black Bears won the national title. A small number of people on campus destroyed property and took some very serious risks as part of the celebration. Those who broke the law were apprehended and prosecuted. We are certain that those people would make different choices, given the chance to re-live that evening. UMaine police will be hard at work during these upcoming activities to ensure the safety of all involved. Should activities turn in a negative direction, they will act decisively and the consequences will be serious.
This year's Black Bear men's hockey team has been a source of pride for us all. Let's join together to celebrate their success in a way that reflects positively both on them and on the University of Maine.
Here's what we've got planned:
--On Tuesday, 4/3/07 we will have a noontime rally at the Memorial Union. This will feature live band music and appearances by President Kennedy, Coach Whitehead and several of the players.
--On Thursday, 4/5/07, the Black Bears will play Michigan State beginning at 4:00 p.m. We will show the television broadcast of the game on large screen televisions around the Maine Marketplace. Special food and beverage bargains will be available during the game.
--The winner of Thursday's game will face the Boston College/North Dakota winner on Saturday, April 7, 2007 beginning at 7:00 p.m. Once again, presuming a Black Bear win, live television broadcast will show on large screens, and the Maine Marketplace will be open with special offerings. Following the game, win or lose, we will host a bonfire and cookout, with music, in the parking lot between Lord Hall and Alumni Hall.
These activities promise to be both memorable and fun. We hope you will join us.
